On Purpose

Back in the day, Adam was strolling around in the Garden of Eden. He just had been created and now stood on his feet, not quite knowing what to do with himself (ok, that’s my idea of it, I admit).

God was quite happy with him, but he thought, well, something is missing here! What could that be? He called Adam and said: “Hey Adam, I think you need a job. So go out and do something useful. Tend the garden. Make it beautiful and lush, prune the trees, collect dry grass and make sure the flowers have enough water.”

Next he thought, ok, this guy seems pretty smart, he would be finished in no time and needs something else to do. He continued: “When you are done and the garden here is gorgeous, find the animals that are around and give them a name.”

Adam listened attentively, understood how important it is to be committed to a job and ran to do what he was told. He gave his very best. When everything was done he came back and God was pretty pleased.

He looked at Adam and thought: What a good fellow, he was excelling in his job. I will give him the most beautiful gift for being such a good Adam.” And this is how he came to make Eve.

Thank you for tolerating my deeply ornamental descriptiveness here. I was not part of the scenery and I am aware the Bible is written in a different type of style. But still, fact is that what is written in the book of Genesis is that the first thing Adam got was a purpose. He did not get something to eat, a nice pair of jeans or an iPod. He got a job to do.

Adam was not a random creation that should randomly walk around. No, Adam was given a goal and another goal. And when he proved to take his purpose seriously, God gave him charming company.

I am not a religious person, but still to me this is amazingly telling. Before anything else we need a purpose. Unfortunately unlike Adam, we usually don’t hear our creator speak and no manual is delivered when we do our first breath. We have to check our purpose on our own, no one on the outside knows what that might be for us.

Still, there are people who will take advantage of us in case we do not search and pursue our own purpose. These people will be there to tell us, we are made to get lost in social media scrolling or to buy the thirtyfourth handbag. But all they are is liars. They lie to us. And we are the ones who have to recognize that.

So enjoy the beautiful company of the people you love, they are a true blessing. But first of all be committed to have goals. Goals that are your goals alone. You feel them inside you, they excite you, they make you feel alive, they bring you joy.

Commit to them, they are your life blood.
At least that is how I would interpret Adams first experiences
Much love and all the best,
