The other day I was talking to a friend. He insisted that the nature of reality is subjective.
He told me that every one of us sees things differently and consequently everyone lives in a different reality.
Well, this is not the first time I hear a statement like this.
Everytime I encounter this idea it shakes me. It’s wrong. Let me explain.
There are controversies that Pluto is a planet.
Is it a planet or not? Does it have planet status or not?
People do have different concepts about the characteristics of a planet.
And they wonder if Pluto fits into that category.
BUT. There is NO controversy that Pluto actually exists.
It is there. You can see it. Not with the naked eye but with a telescope. It has been discovered in 1930. Immediately after its discovery it was named the “Ninth Planet”.
So let’s recap.
– We do have an existing thing that was named Pluto. Everybody agrees that this is a real thing, so it exists in ONE shared reality. Nothing to argue about.
– After its discovery, it first was named a planet. It was named the Ninth Planet.
Later it was called Pluto.
– Pluto was officially deplaneted in 2006.
Someone decided, well, it should be considered a dwarf, Pluto from then on was just a wonna-be-planet. Controversy again.
What do we learn from this? Things are nuanced and not one-dimensional.
There is ONE reality. Pluto exists.
The sky is blue, not green. Is it green to you, you need to see an eye specialist.
How we name and interpret what is there is hugely different.
Pluto is a planet. Pluto is a wonna-be planet. Who knows? And I think Pluto doesn’t care.
Better not twist those two!
AND: Last not least, think for yourself!
There are not-matching-up theories about everything, as well as nomenclatures and statements. We can get lost in everything. But is it worth it?
If it does not make sense it is probably garbage.
Don’t go along with garbage and with the people insisting on it. There is a better use of your time than gossiping about Plutos status.
Much love,
Anselma
